Typical applications

  • Hard glass and mica sealing components
  • Ceramic substrate and hybrid circuit packages
  • Precision measuring instruments and standards
  • Thermostatic and compensation elements

Welding, forming and machining

Welding
Weld with matching filler in a protective atmosphere. Control the chemistry across the joint because the expansion coefficient moves quickly with nickel content.
Heat treatment
Anneal at 850 - 950 °C in a protective atmosphere and slow cool to stabilise dimensions.
Hot and cold forming
Hot work in the range stated by the mill for this grade, then re-solution or re-age before final machining so that the delivered condition matches the certificate.
Machining
Machine with sharp carbide or high-speed steel tooling, positive rake, constant feed and ample coolant. Never dwell - the surface work-hardens quickly.

Expansion Alloy 4J50 frequently asked questions

What is the chemical composition of Expansion Alloy 4J50?
Expansion Alloy 4J50 is supplied to the following composition limits: Iron (Fe) Balance; Nickel (Ni) 49.0 - 51.0; Manganese (Mn) 0.80 max; Silicon (Si) 0.30 max; Carbon (C) 0.05 max; Cobalt (Co) 0.50 max; Phosphorus (P) 0.020 max; Sulphur (S) 0.020 max. Single figures are maximum limits unless shown as a range; the heat analysis on your EN 10204 3.1 certificate is the governing record.
Which specifications cover Expansion Alloy 4J50 flanges and pipe fittings?
Forged flanges and forging stock: To order against GB/T 15018 (4J50). Butt weld elbows, tees, reducers and caps: Not normally supplied. Hangbo supplies to these specifications with dimensional compliance to ASME B16.5, B16.47 or B16.9 as applicable.
What is Expansion Alloy 4J50 normally used for?
The main uses are hard glass and mica sealing components; ceramic substrate and hybrid circuit packages; precision measuring instruments and standards. Buyers pick it where the alternative would be a lower alloyed grade that would not survive the service.
Can Hangbo supply Expansion Alloy 4J50 elbows, tees and flanges from stock or to order?
Yes. We forge and machine flanges to ASME B16.5 and B16.47, form butt weld elbows and tees to ASME B16.9, and supply matching seamless pipe, all from the same heat where required so that the whole spool carries one set of mechanical properties. Lead times depend on size and quantity - send the drawing or the line list for a firm quote.
