Inconel 600 (N06600): composition, properties, fittings and flanges

Inconel 600 (UNS N06600, W. Nr. 2.4816, GH3600) is a nickel-chromium-iron alloy with 72 % nickel minimum, 14-17 % chromium and 6-10 % iron. It combines resistance to organic and inorganic compounds, immunity to chloride-ion stress corrosion cracking, and good performance in caustic alkalis, chlorine and fluorine-bearing…

Welding, forming and machining

Welding
Weld readily by GTAW, GMAW, SMAW and SAW using ERNiCrFe-3 filler with clean joint preparation. No preheat is needed; keep interpass temperature low and avoid sulphur, lead and phosphorus contamination, which cause hot cracking.
Hot forming
Hot work between 1200 °C and 870 °C; heavy reductions should be completed above 980 °C and followed by annealing at 925-1010 °C for fine grain size.
Machining
The high nickel content makes the alloy gummy and prone to work hardening. Use sharp positive rake carbide or HSS tools, generous chip breakers, low cutting speeds and continuous feeds.
Annealing
Stress relieve at 870-980 °C, or full anneal at 925-1010 °C followed by rapid cooling to avoid carbide precipitation in the 540-760 °C range.

Inconel 600 frequently asked questions

What is Inconel 600 best at?
Resisting chloride stress corrosion cracking together with high-temperature oxidation and carburisation. That combination makes it standard for heat treatment fixtures, furnace components and nuclear steam generator tubing.
How does Inconel 600 differ from Inconel 625?
Inconel 600 has less chromium, no molybdenum and no niobium, so it is far less resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion in seawater or reducing acids, but costs less per kilogram and performs better in dry chlorine and high-temperature furnace atmospheres.
Is Inconel 600 suitable for caustic soda?
Yes. Nickel-rich alloys resist concentrated caustic solutions where steel would crack, which is why Inconel 600 is used for evaporators, rayon production vessels and soap manufacturing equipment.
What are the standard specifications for Inconel 600 pipe and fittings?
Seamless pipe to ASTM B167, condenser tube to ASTM B163, butt weld fittings to ASTM B366 WP600 in ASME B16.9 dimensions, and forged flanges to ASTM B564 in ASME B16.5 dimensions.
Can Inconel 600 be used for nuclear applications?
It has a long service history in pressurised water reactor steam generators. For new build, Alloy 690 is often preferred for improved primary side stress corrosion cracking resistance, and Hangbo supplies both grades.
