Product forms available
Hangbo supplies this grade in the following forms. Sizes outside the listed range can often be produced to order.
- Bolts, studs, nuts and washers to ASTM A453 Grade 660
- Forged turbine discs, rings and casings
- Cold formed springs for high-temperature service
- Machined components produced to drawing
- Forged flanges for high-temperature bolting assemblies
Typical applications
- High-temperature flanged joint bolting in refineries, petrochemical plants and power stations
- Gas turbine discs, blades, shafts, casings and afterburner parts
- Jet engine manifolds, fasteners, springs and support rings
- Offshore and subsea bolting requiring strength plus corrosion resistance
- High-temperature springs in valves and actuators
- Cryogenic equipment because the aged alloy retains toughness to -253 °C
Welding, forming and machining
- Heat treatment
- Solution treat at 980 °C for 1 hour and oil quench, then age at 720 °C for 16 hours and air cool for maximum strength. Some applications use a lower solution temperature or double age to tune toughness and stress rupture life.
- Welding
- Weldable by GTAW and electron beam methods, generally in the solution treated condition followed by ageing. Because it is a gamma prime hardening alloy, post-weld strain-age cracking must be considered on heavily restrained joints.
- Machining
- Machine in the solution treated condition whenever possible, then age. In the fully aged condition, use rigid carbide tooling, low speeds and positive feeds.
- Fastener practice
- Cold work before ageing to raise tensile and fatigue strength; ASTM A453 Grades A to D define the strength class required for the joint design.
