Typical applications

  • Gas turbine combustion cans, transition liners and ducts
  • High-temperature gas-cooled reactor heat exchangers and piping
  • Nitric acid and catalyst handling equipment at temperature
  • Heat treatment furnace muffles and radiant tubes

Welding, forming and machining

Welding
Weld by GTAW or GMAW with ERNiCrCoMo-1 filler. It has good weldability for a high-temperature alloy; no post-weld heat treatment is needed for most service.
Heat treatment
Solution anneal at 1150 - 1200 °C and rapid cool. No ageing treatment is used - the alloy is a solid-solution grade.
Hot and cold forming
Hot work in the range stated by the mill for this grade, then re-solution or re-age before final machining so that the delivered condition matches the certificate.
Machining
Machine with sharp carbide or high-speed steel tooling, positive rake, constant feed and ample coolant. Never dwell - the surface work-hardens quickly.

Inconel 617 frequently asked questions

What is the chemical composition of Inconel 617?
Inconel 617 is supplied to the following composition limits: Nickel (Ni) 44.5 min (balance); Chromium (Cr) 20.0 - 24.0; Cobalt (Co) 10.0 - 15.0; Molybdenum (Mo) 8.0 - 10.0; Aluminium (Al) 0.80 - 1.50; Carbon (C) 0.05 - 0.15; Iron (Fe) 3.00 max; Titanium (Ti) 0.60 max. Single figures are maximum limits unless shown as a range; the heat analysis on your EN 10204 3.1 certificate is the governing record.
Which specifications cover Inconel 617 flanges and pipe fittings?
Forged flanges and forging stock: ASTM B564 / ASME SB-564 (UNS N06617). Butt weld elbows, tees, reducers and caps: ASTM B366 / ASME SB-366 (WP617). Hangbo supplies to these specifications with dimensional compliance to ASME B16.5, B16.47 or B16.9 as applicable.
What is Inconel 617 normally used for?
The main uses are gas turbine combustion cans, transition liners and ducts; high-temperature gas-cooled reactor heat exchangers and piping; nitric acid and catalyst handling equipment at temperature. Buyers pick it where the alternative would be a lower alloyed grade that would not survive the service.
Can Hangbo supply Inconel 617 elbows, tees and flanges from stock or to order?
Yes. We forge and machine flanges to ASME B16.5 and B16.47, form butt weld elbows and tees to ASME B16.9, and supply matching seamless pipe, all from the same heat where required so that the whole spool carries one set of mechanical properties. Lead times depend on size and quantity - send the drawing or the line list for a firm quote.
