Hastelloy C-4 (N06455): composition, properties, fittings and flanges

Hastelloy C-4 (N06455, W. Nr. 2.4610) is Nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy stabilised against sensitisation. Hastelloy C-4 is specified at Nickel Balance, Chromium 14.0 - 18.0, Molybdenum 14.0 - 17.0. Hastelloy C-4 removes the titanium from C-276 chemistry and holds carbon and iron very low, so it resists grain boundary…

Product forms available

Hangbo supplies this grade in the following forms. Sizes outside the listed range can often be produced to order.

  • Forged flanges blanks and finished flanges to ASME B16.5, B16.47 Series A/B and B16.36
  • Butt weld elbows, tees, reducers, caps and stub ends to ASME B16.9 and MSS SP-43
  • Seamless pipe and tube to the applicable ASTM / ASME pipe specification
  • Forged rings, discs and hubs machined to your drawing

Typical applications

  • Flue gas desulphurisation and waste incineration scrubbers
  • Mixed acid and halide process streams with thermal cycling
  • Pharmaceutical and fine chemical reactors
  • As-welded piping where post-weld annealing is impractical

Welding, forming and machining

Welding
Excellent as-welded corrosion performance; use ERNiCrMo-7 filler and standard GTAW practice. Low carbon and silicon keep the heat affected zone free of harmful precipitates.
Heat treatment
Solution anneal at 1040 - 1095 °C and water quench, or stabilise at 870 - 900 °C where specification permits.
Hot and cold forming
Hot work in the range stated by the mill for this grade, then re-solution or re-age before final machining so that the delivered condition matches the certificate.
Machining
Machine with sharp carbide or high-speed steel tooling, positive rake, constant feed and ample coolant. Never dwell - the surface work-hardens quickly.

Hastelloy C-4 frequently asked questions

What is the chemical composition of Hastelloy C-4?
Hastelloy C-4 is supplied to the following composition limits: Nickel (Ni) Balance; Chromium (Cr) 14.0 - 18.0; Molybdenum (Mo) 14.0 - 17.0; Iron (Fe) 3.00 max; Titanium (Ti) 0.70 max; Carbon (C) 0.015 max; Silicon (Si) 0.08 max; Manganese (Mn) 1.00 max. Single figures are maximum limits unless shown as a range; the heat analysis on your EN 10204 3.1 certificate is the governing record.
Which specifications cover Hastelloy C-4 flanges and pipe fittings?
Forged flanges and forging stock: ASTM B564 / ASME SB-564 (UNS N06455). Butt weld elbows, tees, reducers and caps: ASTM B366 / ASME SB-366 (WP grade to order). Hangbo supplies to these specifications with dimensional compliance to ASME B16.5, B16.47 or B16.9 as applicable.
What is Hastelloy C-4 normally used for?
The main uses are flue gas desulphurisation and waste incineration scrubbers; mixed acid and halide process streams with thermal cycling; pharmaceutical and fine chemical reactors. Buyers pick it where the alternative would be a lower alloyed grade that would not survive the service.
Can Hangbo supply Hastelloy C-4 elbows, tees and flanges from stock or to order?
Yes. We forge and machine flanges to ASME B16.5 and B16.47, form butt weld elbows and tees to ASME B16.9, and supply matching seamless pipe, all from the same heat where required so that the whole spool carries one set of mechanical properties. Lead times depend on size and quantity - send the drawing or the line list for a firm quote.
