Hastelloy B-2 and B-3: the hydrochloric acid specialists
Why Hastelloy B-2 and B-3 are used for hydrochloric acid: very high molybdenum, low chromium, thermal stability differences between the two grades and specification notes for flanges and fittings.

Why chromium is the wrong answer for hydrochloric acid
In oxidising environments chromium builds the passive film that protects stainless steel. In non oxidising hydrochloric acid that film cannot form or repair itself, so chromium adds little. Molybdenum, by contrast, improves resistance in reducing acid. The nickel molybdenum alloys push molybdenum to roughly 26 to 30 % while keeping chromium near 1 to 3 %, which is why they handle hydrochloric acid at concentrations and temperatures that destroy stainless and duplex grades.
B-2 versus B-3
| Item | B-2 | B-3 |
|---|---|---|
| UNS number | N10665 | N10675 |
| Molybdenum | 26.0 - 30.0 % | 27.0 - 32.0 % |
| Chromium | 1.0 % maximum | 1.0 - 3.0 % |
| Thermal stability | Poor, precipitates during exposure | Much improved |
| Fabrication tolerance | Demanding | More forgiving |
| Typical choice | Legacy equipment only | New designs |
Limits that must be respected
- Oxidising contaminants are harmful. Ferric or cupric ions, dissolved oxygen or nitric acid contamination raise corrosion rates sharply. If oxidising species are present, use a chromium bearing alloy such as C-276 instead.
- Avoid intermediate temperature exposure. Even B-3 should be solution annealed after hot forming and should not be stress relieved in the precipitation range.
- Weld with the correct filler. ERNiMo-10 for B-3 and the matching filler for B-2; never mix nickel chromium filler into a nickel molybdenum joint.
