Stabilised stainless steel: when 321 and 347 beat 304H and 316H
Why 321 and 347 are specified for elevated temperature and welded fabrication: titanium and niobium stabilisation, sensitisation resistance, service limits and specification notes.

The problem stabilisation solves
Plain austenitic stainless grades with normal carbon levels lose chromium from the grain boundaries when they are held in the sensitising range. The depleted zones corrode preferentially, producing intergranular attack that can look like general corrosion but is far more dangerous because it follows the grain boundaries. Low carbon grades avoid this for most welding, but stabilised grades are preferred where the component will operate in the sensitising range.
321 or 347: how to choose
| Item | 321 | 347 |
|---|---|---|
| UNS number | S32100 | S34700 |
| Stabilising element | Titanium | Niobium plus tantalum |
| Welding behaviour | Titanium can be lost across the arc | More stable across the arc |
| Thermal fatigue | Good | Often preferred |
| Typical use | Expansion joints, aircraft exhaust, heaters | Refinery piping, heater tubes, high temperature weldments |
Practical notes for purchase
- State the stabilising element ratio. Require titanium or niobium to be reported relative to carbon on the certificate.
- Ask for a stabilising heat treatment where service is in the sensitising range, typically around 900 C.
- Use a matched or niobium stabilised filler so the weld metal retains stabilisation.
- Confirm intergranular corrosion testing where the specification requires it.
