Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) vs Grade 2: strength versus corrosion
Composition, strength, corrosion resistance, weldability and cost comparison of titanium Grade 5 and Grade 2 for flanges, fittings and pressure containing components.

Side by side
| Item | Grade 2 | Grade 5 |
|---|---|---|
| UNS number | R50400 | R56400 |
| Common name | Commercially pure titanium | Ti-6Al-4V, TC4 |
| Aluminium | Not specified | 5.5 - 6.75 % |
| Vanadium | Not specified | 3.5 - 4.5 % |
| Minimum yield strength | About 275 MPa | About 828 MPa |
| Corrosion resistance | Reference level | Slightly lower, still excellent |
| Formability | Excellent | Limited cold forming |
| Weldability | Excellent | Good with control |
| Typical use | Process piping, heat exchangers, marine | High pressure, aerospace, downhole, fatigue loaded parts |
When Grade 5 is the correct call
- High pressure components. The strength advantage allows a much thinner section.
- Weight critical installations. Offshore and aerospace applications.
- Fatigue loaded parts. Better fatigue strength than commercially pure grades.
- Elevated temperature. Useful strength retention above the range of Grade 2.
When Grade 2 is the better buy
For most chemical, marine and desalination piping, Grade 2 is the correct and more economical choice. It is easier to form and weld, it has the best documented corrosion record in seawater and wet chlorine, and it is available in a wider range of product forms and sizes with shorter lead times.
Fabrication notes for both grades
- Shielding is critical. Argon backing and trailing shields are mandatory; any straw or blue oxide indicates contamination and must be removed.
- Contamination control. Dedicated tools, clean gloves and no contact with carbon steel swarf.
- Machining. Low thermal conductivity means heat stays at the tool; use sharp tools, moderate speeds and generous coolant.
- Galvanic isolation. Both grades are noble relative to steel; isolate dissimilar joints.
