Titanium Grade 7 and Grade 12: closing the crevice and reducing acid gaps
What palladium in Grade 7 and nickel molybdenum in Grade 12 add to commercially pure titanium, and when the premium is justified for hot brine, acidic chloride and reducing chemical service.

What the additions actually change
Titanium resists corrosion through a stable oxide film, but in tight crevices at elevated temperature the local chemistry can become reducing and the film breaks down. Palladium and nickel both provide cathodic sites that keep the passive film stable under those conditions, raising the crevice corrosion threshold substantially.
Grade 2, 7 and 12 compared
| Item | Grade 2 | Grade 7 | Grade 12 |
|---|---|---|---|
| UNS number | R50400 | R52400 | R53400 |
| Key addition | None | Palladium 0.12 - 0.25 % | Nickel 0.6 - 0.9 %, molybdenum 0.2 - 0.4 % |
| Crevice temperature in brine | About 80 C | Well above 100 C | Above Grade 2 |
| Reducing acid | Limited | Improved | Improved |
| Relative cost | Lowest | Highest | Middle |
| Strength | Baseline | Comparable with Grade 2 | Higher than Grade 2 |
How to decide
- Estimate the crevice temperature. If the metal temperature at gasket faces, tube to tubesheet joints or under deposits exceeds about 80 C in chloride service, Grade 2 is at risk.
- Check the reducing strength. Grade 12 is often adequate and much cheaper than Grade 7.
- Confirm the geometry. Very tight crevices and low flow justify the palladium cost of Grade 7.
- Compare with alternatives. In some duties a nickel alloy or super duplex may be more economical than either titanium grade.
