Typical applications

  • Current transformers, instrument transformers and sensors
  • Magnetic shields, mu-metal enclosures and recording heads
  • High-sensitivity relays and pulse transformers
  • Aerospace and precision instrumentation magnetic circuits

Welding, forming and machining

Welding
Not fusion welded in magnetic service. Any cold work or welding must be followed by the full high-temperature hydrogen anneal to restore permeability.
Heat treatment
Magnetic anneal at 1100 - 1200 °C in dry hydrogen with a controlled cooling rate; mechanical shock after annealing degrades the properties.
Hot and cold forming
Hot work in the range stated by the mill for this grade, then re-solution or re-age before final machining so that the delivered condition matches the certificate.
Machining
Machine with sharp carbide or high-speed steel tooling, positive rake, constant feed and ample coolant. Never dwell - the surface work-hardens quickly.

Soft Magnetic Alloy 1J79 (Permalloy 80) frequently asked questions

What is the chemical composition of Soft Magnetic Alloy 1J79 (Permalloy 80)?
Soft Magnetic Alloy 1J79 (Permalloy 80) is supplied to the following composition limits: Iron (Fe) Balance; Nickel (Ni) 78.0 - 80.0; Molybdenum (Mo) 3.80 - 4.50; Manganese (Mn) 0.60 - 1.10; Silicon (Si) 0.30 - 0.50; Carbon (C) 0.03 max; Phosphorus (P) 0.020 max; Sulphur (S) 0.020 max. Single figures are maximum limits unless shown as a range; the heat analysis on your EN 10204 3.1 certificate is the governing record.
Which specifications cover Soft Magnetic Alloy 1J79 (Permalloy 80) flanges and pipe fittings?
Forged flanges and forging stock: To order against GB/T 15018 (1J79). Butt weld elbows, tees, reducers and caps: Not normally supplied. Hangbo supplies to these specifications with dimensional compliance to ASME B16.5, B16.47 or B16.9 as applicable.
What is Soft Magnetic Alloy 1J79 (Permalloy 80) normally used for?
The main uses are current transformers, instrument transformers and sensors; magnetic shields, mu-metal enclosures and recording heads; high-sensitivity relays and pulse transformers. Buyers pick it where the alternative would be a lower alloyed grade that would not survive the service.
Can Hangbo supply Soft Magnetic Alloy 1J79 (Permalloy 80) elbows, tees and flanges from stock or to order?
Yes. We forge and machine flanges to ASME B16.5 and B16.47, form butt weld elbows and tees to ASME B16.9, and supply matching seamless pipe, all from the same heat where required so that the whole spool carries one set of mechanical properties. Lead times depend on size and quantity - send the drawing or the line list for a firm quote.
