Stainless Steel 316 / 316L (S31600 / S31603): composition, properties, fittings and flanges

Types 316 and 316L are molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steels containing 16-18 % chromium, 10-14 % nickel and 2-3 % molybdenum. The molybdenum addition roughly doubles resistance to chloride pitting compared with 304 and gives better resistance to sulphuric acid, brine and organic acids. 316L limits carbon to 0.03 %…

Product forms available

Hangbo supplies this grade in the following forms. Sizes outside the listed range can often be produced to order.

  • Seamless and welded pipe to ASME B36.19M schedules
  • Tube for heat exchangers, boilers and instrumentation
  • Butt weld elbows, tees, reducers, caps and stub ends to ASME B16.9
  • Forged flanges to ASME B16.5 Class 150-2500

Typical applications

  • General chemical, petrochemical and process industry piping

  • Pulp and paper mill piping, bleach plant auxiliaries
  • Water treatment, desalination auxiliary piping and pump systems

Welding, forming and machining

Welding
Excellent weldability by all standard processes with ER316L filler. Control heat input and interpass temperature to around 150 °C; use low carbon filler and avoid sensitising in the 425-815 °C range where exposed to a corrosive service afterwards.
Heat treatment
Solution anneal at 1010-1120 °C followed by rapid cooling. Stress relieve at 480-620 °C only when the subsequent service is not sensitising.
Machining
Standard austenitic practice: sharp tooling, positive rake, adequate feed below the work-hardened layer and generous coolant.
Service limits
Avoid stagnant chloride solutions above roughly 50 °C and high chloride levels, which cause pitting and stress corrosion cracking. Upgrade to duplex 2205, super austenitic or nickel alloy when chloride content is high.

Stainless Steel 316 / 316L frequently asked questions

Should I specify 316 or 316L?
Specify 316L for welded construction because its 0.03 % maximum carbon prevents chromium carbide precipitation in the heat affected zone. Dual certified 316/316L material is common and satisfies both requirements.
Is 316 really stainless in seawater?
Not reliably. Type 316 resists marine atmosphere and flowing seawater reasonably well at low temperature, but it pits and crevice corrodes in warm or stagnant seawater. Duplex 2205, super austenitic grades or titanium are needed for immersed service.
What is the difference between 316 and 316Ti?
316Ti adds titanium for stabilisation and has slightly higher high-temperature strength, useful above about 550 °C. For most chemical duty 316L is preferred and cheaper.
Which fittings and flange standards apply?
Butt weld fittings use ASTM A403 WP316 or WP316L to ASME B16.9 dimensions; forged flanges use ASTM A182 F316 or F316L to ASME B16.5 dimensions; small bore forged fittings use ASME B16.11.
Does 316L have lower strength than 316?
Yes, minimum tensile strength is 485 MPa against 515 MPa. In practice dual certified material often exceeds the higher requirement, and many codes permit the higher allowable stress of the dual certified product.
